Artist Interview: Laura Williams
In our latest blog, we caught up with lash and brow artist Laura Williams from Lashes By Laura to find out more about her business, favourite Permalash products and her fantastic double nomination in the 2021 Hair and Beauty Awards! Read on to find out more.
Tell us a little bit about yourself, how long have you worked in the beauty industry and where are you based? My name is Laura Williams, I’m 26 and run a home-based salon in Liverpool. I have worked in the beauty industry for over 3 years now. I work part-time doing lashes and brows alongside my full-time job in the NHS.
What made you want to work in the beauty industry? I am a people person. I love meeting new people and finding out about their lives. I also love beauty, so the beauty industry seemed like the perfect fit for me.
How did you get into doing lashes and brows? I always loved getting my own lashes and brows done. I started researching how to get the qualifications to do this myself. I spent a few months thinking and hesitating. I was worried I wouldn’t get enough clients or be ‘good enough.’ I eventually took the plunge and gained my qualifications; it was the best decision I have ever made. I have not looked back since. I am now qualified in Classic, Hybrid and Russian eyelash extensions, lash lift and tint, brow wax and tint and eyebrow lamination.
You recently qualified as a lash and brow educator; can you tell us more about this and what is involved? I am so excited to have set up my own training academy. I have put a lot of hard work into this new business venture. Firstly, I needed to gain my teaching qualification, which required me to pass online assessments and exams. I also had to write lesson plans for each training course. Next, I had to write my course manuals. This took months of research and dedication. I wrote more words for my manuals than I did for my university dissertation. I ensured that my course content is thorough and detailed. Qualifying in beauty treatments was the best thing I have ever done; now I am able to share my knowledge and help others on their own journey.

You’re a finalist in not one, but two categories at the Hair and Beauty Awards – which is an amazing achievement! How does it feel to be in the running for these prestigious awards? I was shocked to receive nominations in two categories! Even just getting shortlisted is an amazing achievement and I am so proud of myself. Being nominated alongside some of the best names in the business is an honour. I cannot wait for the virtual ceremony in March.
We’ve seen huge changes in the beauty industry over the past year, as a result of COVID-19. How has this impacted your business? The pandemic has had a huge impact on my business. Much like everyone else in the industry my business has been closed longer than it has been open over the past year. It has been tough and I miss my clients so much. Luckily, I have another job that has kept me busy. I have also been retailing products that have helped my business grow.
What would you say your biggest achievement is? My biggest achievement is building my business by myself whilst working a full-time job in the NHS. I book clients in after my shift at the hospital and often don’t get a day off. It has been tough and my clients often ask me how I do it. I love both my jobs and I like keeping busy and I would not change it for the world.
Who is your biggest source of inspiration? Whilst not related to the beauty industry, my biggest source of inspiration at the moment comes from Courtney Black. She is a personal trainer and has launched her own fitness app. She has grown her business throughout the pandemic and is going from strength to strength. She has a positive mindset and is extremely driven and motivated. She has helped me to keep on track and focus on my goals.

What do you hope to be doing in 5 years time? In five years time, I hope to be running my business full time. I will be working on clients as well as having a training academy with popular fully booked courses. I also would love my own lash product line.
What’s your favourite thing about your being a lash artist/brow technician? Being able to meet people of all ages and all walks of life. I love finding out about my clients, we end up becoming more like friends.
What’s your favourite Permalash product? My favourite Permalash product is the blue-black tint. It is my holy grail product for lash lifts. I get Instagram messages daily from people all over the world asking how I achieve such perfect lifts and I’m not scared to share with them that it is this product that makes all the difference. This tint is included in all of my lash lift courses, so my students can experience how great it is for themselves.
What are your three must-have beauty products? I have recently started using Paula’s Choice 2% BHA liquid exfoliant, it’s a miracle worker. My skin has never looked so healthy and glowing. I also could not live without my Revlon UniqOne spray. It is a leave-in conditioner and my hair would be a knotty mess without it. Lastly, my lip balm!
